Below is a list of resources recommended by the author to help people in reading the Scriptures. A good Bible is a must, but other resources are recommended as well.

NIV Study Bible

This is the most popular Bible translation for English-speaking Christians today. It is a readable and accurate translation of the text with study notes. The NIV Life Application Bible is also a great choice for those who prefer an emphasis on practical application.

NLT Bible

A good translation for those who want a Bible that is easy to read. Translators (from Hebrew and Greek into English) made every effort to provide a clear, readable version.

How to Read the Bible for All It’s Worth

It’s hard to improve on this classic book, a guide to biblical interpretation written for the layperson. The strength of this work lies in its emphasis on the need to approach the various genres of Scripture (stories, poetry, sermons, proverbs, letters, etc.) as unique contributions to the whole. Poetry must be read as poetry, not as a sermon, and so on.

The New Bible Commentary

Here is a one-volume commentary on the entire Bible written by the most respected evangelical scholars in the world today. The commentary packs a lot of punch.  You’ll find most of the basic explanations you need on biblical passages in one handy source.

30 Days to Understanding the Bible

Max Anders does a nice job of helping readers understand how the entire Bible fits together. This is a very basic introduction to the big picture of the Bible for people who are brand new to reading Scripture. And it’s easy to get through in 30 days.

New Christian’s Handbook

Anders provides a nice overview of Christian theology for new believers. It also includes practical guidance on how Christians should live out their faith.

Bible Gateway

Bible Gateway  is a free online resource that provides access to Bible versions, a Bible search engine, Bible-reading plans, devotional helps and commentaries. The commentaries are hit and miss for quality (there are no copyright laws covering some older works), but the overall quality of the material on this website is very solid.
