January 2 | Daily Devotion

If you plan to read every verse of Scripture this year, use the  Lectio Continua (continuous reading) passages. The  Lectio Semi-continua (shorter reading) is an abbreviated selection of verses from the day’s passages. Lectio Divina (divine reading) is Pastor Lionel Young’s commentary on the daily readings. See the Resources page on the Lectio Divina website for additional study helps.

Lectio Continua: a continuous reading of every verse

Lectio Semi-continua: shorter reading selections from the passages

Lectio Divina (meditation on the text)

“”Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters.”
~Genesis 5:22

Sin is at the heart of the world’s problems. The sinfulness of mankind brings hatred, jealousy, and bloodshed into God’s creation. To stem the tide, God extends an invitation to all of us to do what is right (Gen. 4:6-7). With His help we can master the sin that wants to master us. While the rest of the world lives in defiance of the Creator, we can be like Enoch who “walked with God” and like Noah who found favor with God. Christ, who lived to please God in a fallen world, is both the example we are to follow and the One to help us master sin. Through Him we have strength.   Through His Word we have wisdom. And through His community (the church) we have encouragement. All the tools we need to walk favorably with God all of our days.

Pray for God’s help to master the sin that wants to master you. The apostle Paul offers wise counsel on this topic in Ephesians 4:17-32: choose what new, right practices and thoughts you can “put on” as you “put off” sin. Identify the awesome habits and attitudes you need to add to your life with His help. Seek God’s aid to sustain the changes that allow you to walk with Him in the sinful world around you.

Lectio Divina  is written by F. Lionel Young III, who serves as the senior pastor of  Calvary Church  in Valparaiso, Indiana. He is the author of  A New Kind of Missionary, a popular introduction to global Christianity.
